Learn how to study efficiently and give yourself the best chance to pass first time. For foreign-educated nurses to come to the United States for employment, you must follow several steps to meet both educational and regulatory requirements. Here is a comprehensive overview of the process:
Select a U.S. state to apply for licensure. Be sure to review closely requirements needed by foreign trained nurses as each state has different requirements. Every state will require a background check to include fingerprints. The application process will provide guidance on how to complete this requirement.
Obtain an evaluation of your foreign nursing education to ensure it meets U.S. standards. Be sure to verify which organizations are used for transcript verification with the state Board of Nursing that you are applying for licensure by exam with. Most states require proof of English proficiency; tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic are commonly accepted.
Apply to the Board of Nursing in the state where you intend to work. This will determine your eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN®. Next, register for the NCLEX-RN® exam through Pearson VUE. Lastly, study for and pass the NCLEX-RN® exam with the help of the NCLEX® Test Prep program by Florence. This test assesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities essential for safe and effective practice as a registered nurse.
Once you have passed the NCLEX® exam, you can begin searching for job opportunities in the U.S. Many employers offer recruitment programs for foreign-educated nurses. Make sure to obtain a job offer from a U.S. employer willing to sponsor your work visa. Employers may also assist with relocation and other aspects of the transition.
The most common visas for nurses are the H-1B visa (for specialized nursing occupations) and the EB-3 visa (employment-based immigrant visa). The employer typically handles the visa application process. If applying from outside the U.S., attend a visa interview at a U.S. embassy or consulate in your home country.
